AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

What is Interior Design AI?
Interior Design AI, or Interior Design Artificial Intelligence, refers to the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in the field of interior design to streamline and enhance various aspects of the design process. It leverages advanced algorithms, machine learning, and data analysis to assist users in creating more efficient, creative, and personalized interior spaces.
What Can Interior Design AI do?

- Environmental Sustainability: AI can recommend sustainable and eco-friendly design choices, such as energy-efficient materials and appliances, promoting environmentally conscious interior design.

Virtual Room Visualizations: My Test Runs and Results
In this blog, I test out interior design AI virtual room visualizations. The reason I chose to test room visualizations (aka 3D renderings) is because 3D renderings take eons to create. Any designer reading this post is probably nodding their head in agreement. Creating 3D renderings is very tedious and takes HOURS on end. I mean seriously, it’s something that I dread. So if there is an interior design AI out there that can take this pain away – I’m sold.
So, I tested out seven interior design AI virtual room visualization features to see what kind of ideas the AI came up with. Also, judging how realistic and good these visualizations came to be.
For the purpose of my experiment, I used some photos of a room that I am actually currently decorating.

Now, these photos are not really good. Lol, I tend to suck at taking my “before” photos. However, I thought maybe this would actually challenge the AI more.

Paintit.ai
First on the list is Paintit.ai, a tool that instantly reminded me of ChatGPT, both in its layout and in how you interact with it. It was incredibly easy to use and impressively fast. I was especially struck by how intuitive the AI felt, and I loved that it suggests real furniture options that closely match the designs it generates. A very cool feature for anyone looking to bring AI-powered design to life.
This is the design this AI came up with:

It’s a simple design, but the realism is impressive. It definitely made me do a double take, like…is this AI-generated or a photo of a real interior? The Scandinavian style leans minimal by nature, so I’m still fully on board with this look. I’m genuinely impressed!

VisualizeAI
The next AI on our review list is VisualizeAI. Developed by a Canadian company, this tool is designed for interior designers and decorators, as well as architects, since it also has the capability to render exteriors. Let’s take a look at how it performed with this bedroom.

I really love how this AI added a wall mural — that’s not something you usually see AI do. A+ for creativity! Read my full review of this AI here: Designer Reviews VisualizeAI: The Complete AI Tool For Decorating

Spacely AI
Spacely AI is designed specifically for interior designers and architects, offering both exterior and interior rendering capabilities. What makes it stand out is its seamless integration with SketchUp and its robust toolkit tailored for professionals. What I especially like about this AI is its ability to generate multiple design options, each with rich renderings, in just a few short minutes. See below for one example output.

This output looks very realistic and achievable to me—I especially love the light fixtures! Read my full Spacely AI review here: The Ultimate AI Tool for Interior Designers and Architectural Rendering
AIHomeDesign.com
AIHomeDesign.com is catered towards homeowners seeking inspiration, designers streamlining workflows, and real estate professional staging homes, AIHomeDesign offers intelligent tools to visualize, plan, and execute stunning interiors with ease. From generating realistic room mockups to suggesting colour palettes and furniture layouts, the platform combines AI efficiency with design expertise. With an intuitive interface and a vast library of styles, AIHomeDesign empowers users to bring their space to life with just a few clicks in just a few minutes.

It was very easy to use AIHomeDesign.com, with a few clicks of a button I was able to upload the photo in question and get this result (ignore the watermark). Honestly, I think it’s very good. It looks very put together, Scandinavian and realistic!
HomeDesigns.ai
The next interior design AI I tried out was HomeDesigns.ai.

I prompted the AI to decorate this room in a Scandinavian style and as you can see, this AI opted for more of a minimalistic design.
Remodel AI App
The Remodel AI App is an AI Interior Design tool that works on your phone. With just a photo of your room, the app uses artificial intelligence to generate stylish design renderings in various aesthetics, from modern minimalism to cozy farmhouse. Keep reading to the end to find out how you can get the Remodel AI App PRO for free.

In terms of this output, I think the quality is really good, it looks pretty realistic. I like that the AI kept the nightstand and headboard and re-coloured them; it gives the design a more realistic and practical decorating approach, as if you’re working with existing pieces rather than starting from scratch.

REimagineHome.ai
REimagineHome is another basic room generator AI. It is very similar to Collov in terms of their pricing, they also use a credit system. What sets ReimagineHome to be different is that it also renders exterior photos as well. I found this AI super easy to use and the website was not glitchy.

Here is what ReimagineHomeAI came up with when I prompted it to design the room in a Scandinavian style (and no I was not going to pay for the image to be watermark-free, lol). Honestly, this one was a total failure. It does not look Scandinavian at all, and it just looks incomplete.
HomeVisualizer.ai
Home Visualizer AI is a super useful interior design tool that offers a variety of rendering options. One standout feature is its Style Fusion function, which allows you to match the style of a reference photo to your own space. It can even turn hand-drawn sketches into realistic renderings, and you can make custom requests for personalized designs. I was really excited about this AI (especially the hand-drawn sketch-to-render feature) so I took a deep dive into this AI and wrote an extensive review: I Tried the Best 3D Room Visualizer AI, Here is my Review.

Home Visualizer AI came up with this when prompted to create a Scandinavian bedroom. This looks like a vignette from an Ikea bedroom. That being said, this AI killed it.

Planner5D.com
Planner5D has a lot of different functions. In short, it allows users to create detailed 2D and 3D floor plans and home designs without needing advanced technical skills. It offers a vast library of furniture, decor, and materials, enabling homeowners, designers, and real estate professionals to visualize spaces realistically. With AI-powered features and AR/VR compatibility, Planner 5D makes it simple to experiment with different layouts, colours, and styles, helping users bring their design ideas to life effortlessly.
I want to mention that Planner 5D offers both a mobile app and a desktop version. For this experiment, I found the mobile app to be more effective. When uploading on the app and selecting “Design Generator,” you can choose both the room type and the style. However, on the desktop version, for some reason, you can’t manipulate the style, the AI will autogenerate different styles.

When I generated a design for this experiment, the AI seemed to take longer than other AIs. However, once it finished, the app produced six different renderings—so I can see why it was taking a little longer. Honestly, I was pretty impressed with most of them. I’ve uploaded the render I liked the most here.
Honestly, I must say that this render is pretty impressive. I also love how this AI generates multiple options, it’s worth waiting a couple extra minutes.
Remodeled.AI
Remodeled.AI is a simple AI that has free trial and paid features/options. The free trial gives you a taste of what the tool can do, while the paid plans unlock more design styles, higher-quality renders, and additional customization features.

In terms of this output, I don’t hate it and I don’t love it. The cat on the bed is really cute, and the AI took what was in the room already and worked with it. So, I will give it points for that!
HOMESTYLER.com
HOMESTYLER is the last interior design AI I decided to give a go (fatigue kicked in). Initally, when I tried out this AI, I wasnt too impressed, as you see the results below. BUT I came to realized that this AI has a lot more features…

Yeah, so this output did not impress me, however, I saw a button that said “3D View”, so I clicked on it and got to a 3D model that looked like:

Now, this impressed me. HOMESTYLER has intrigued me, and I plan on using this AI more to try out the other features they offer such as AR, floor planning and more. Stay tuned on the blog for a full review.
MyArchitectAI
MyArchitectAI has the ability to mimic the style of an uploaded reference photo, similar to Home Visualizer AI, it’s a feature that’s both unique and useful. For this test, I uploaded a generic image of a Scandinavian-style bedroom and prompted the AI to redecorate the space in a similar aesthetic. This is what I got:

Not bad. The bedding could be better, but it seems as if plenty of the AI tools struggled with bedding.
Collov.ai
Collov.ai strictly offers virtual room visualizations, aka 3D renders. Their program features style choice, colour choice, AI customization and partial modification. It’s easy to use and pretty basic. Here is what Collov came up with for the space. I inputted the style to be Scandinavian, which will be the style request for all my renderings.

Overall, I think Collov’s redesign of the space is pretty good! I do question why the AI did not include matching nightstands or cushions on the bed. But, I don’t hate it and it looks quite good if you don’t look too closely. The design is nothing mind-blowing, to me, it looks like a typical hotel room that’s been done a million times.
I’m not completely sold on Collov simply because I found the website to be a bit glitchy. Plus they price on a credit basis, meaning you need to continually buy credits on a monthly basis and every revision to your rendering will cost you credits. As a designer, I know it might take many revisions to really land on the final design, so this charging method might turn out to be overly expensive.
Sofabrain
Sofabrain tailors its AI specifically for interior designers, realtors, and home stagers. It’s a straightforward, easy-to-use tool. After testing over 15 AI interior design platforms, it becomes clear how hard it is to differentiate between most of them—but SofaBrain’s results speak for themselves, so to speak With that said, let’s take a look at the results.

So, this AI completely changed the orientation of the room. But, honestly, I was surprised by how realistic the render looks (FYI I had to download it at a lower resolution). It almost fooled me into thinking it was a real space. So much for “AI slop.”
DesignFiles Enhance with AI

DesignFiles is interior design project management software made specifically for professional designers, so it’s much more than just a tool for creating AI outputs. If you work in the interior design industry, and are looking for an all-in-one software to manage your business, this tool might be exactly what you’re looking for.
The software has powerful AI built directly into the platform, making it one of the first interior-design tools to integrate AI to enhance 3D visuals, mock ups, 3D renders and create designs from scratch.
In Conclusion – The Best and The Worst Interior Design AI
The Best Interior Design AIs
Here are my takes for the best AI Interior Design tools…
Planner5D created some amazing outputs, I love the fact that it’s a mobile app and easy to use. Planner5D also offers other amazing interior design AI features, so this is a great option as well if you need more functionality. I think this AI takes the crown for this experiment.
I think Home Visualizer AI had a great output, even though it was a little predictable. Overall, I love the functions that this AI offers. The AI is very user-friendly and gives you what you ask for. Also, the Home Visualizer team is AWESOME and gave my readers 15% off their subscription by using code DEE15 at checkout www.homevisualizer.ai. I believe this AI tool would be of great value for Home Flippers, Real Estate Agents, Home Staggers, Artists, etc. Full Home Visualizer AI review here: I Tried the Best 3D Room Visualizer AI, Here is my Review.
AIHomeDesign.com is super easy to use, and the results are great. I think it’s a great option for people who are intimidated by interior design AI, as there is no learning curve.
Paintit.ai was incredibly fast and impressive — its photorealism is among the best I’ve seen. Plus, their team is fantastic and is offering my readers 20% off any subscription with the code SPACESBYDEE20.
HOMESTYLER has a really cool 3D feature.

The Worst Interior Design AI
Honestly, I was not too impressed by most of them. But I think REimagineHome really missed the mark style-wise.
However, I do acknowledge how advanced this technology is and I know there is plenty of room for improvement. I am truly excited about that!
A Better Alternative to Interior Design AI
Simply put: working with a real designer.
Let me explain — I actually like interior design AI. It’s fun, trendy, and it even helps streamline parts of my job. But here’s the thing: there’s not much strategy or real-world research behind what the AI creates.
AI can generate a pretty picture — but it doesn’t consider whether the design is realistic, achievable, or within your budget. It won’t tell you where to buy the furniture, if it fits your space properly, or if it even exists.
That’s where I come in.
When I design, I’m not just creating a beautiful visual. I’m sourcing real furniture, from real places, that fits your space and lifestyle. I make sure the final result can actually happen.
So if you’re ready to really design your space, let’s connect through eDesign — virtual interior design that’s just as easy as using AI, but way more personal and practical. I’d love to help bring your vision to life.
