Large Living Room Walls: Ideas On How To Decorate

Decorating large walls can feel overwhelming—and this is coming from a designer. You might be stuck on how to style your living room walls, especially if you’re staring at a big blank wall with no clear direction. The good news? You’ve landed on the right post. Here, I’ll share 10 stylish and modern ideas to decorate your large living room walls in a tasteful way.

10 Modern Large Wall Decor Ideas For Your Living Room

1. Brick

Adding brick or stone to interiors is often overlooked, yet these elements can bring a lot of personality to a space. In my designer opinion, they’re a great way to enrich your home and give it a more luxurious feel. Consider incorporating stone, or another material like tile, to enhance your walls and really make them stand out.

2. Mural

Adding a mural to your living room is a fantastic way to bring character and style to the space. Now, murals are often confused with wallpaper, so let me explain the key difference. Murals can be created with wallpaper or with paint (I’ve even painted a few myself—I swear, it feels like I’ve lived a thousand creative lives!). Unlike wallpaper, which repeats a pattern, murals create one large, continuous image or scene. This makes them more dynamic and impactful than a repeating wallpaper design. That said, don’t get me wrong—I still love a beautifully patterned wallpaper too. So, consider a modern mural for your large living room wall.

3. Dramatic Artwork

Your large living room walls might just be the perfect blank canvas for dramatic artwork. I love bold pieces that make a statement, and the living room is the ideal place for them—it’s where everyone gathers, notices, and appreciates their surroundings (or at least they should!). It’s also the space where guests come together, and there’s no better conversation starter than a striking piece of art. Dramatic artwork brings playful energy, creates impact, and ensures your walls never go unnoticed. So, consider adding a bold piece to dress your large living room walls and make a lasting statement. And, go for fine art and support a local artist if you can.

4. Wainscoting

Wainscoting is an amazing way to dress up a wall, and the best part is that it works in both modern and traditional styles—so you can adapt it to fit your own aesthetic. I love wainscoting because it introduces clean, subtle detail without demanding too much attention. A wall treated with wainscoting can stand beautifully on its own, making it a perfect solution if you’re not big on hanging artwork (however, you could still hang artwork with wainscoting), but still want a thoughtful way to elevate a large wall.

5. Picture Ledge

Here’s my client’s airy living room—and wow, did this space turn out beautifully! Honestly, who wouldn’t want to spend an afternoon here? Introducing a picture ledge into your living room is a fantastic way to display a collection of art pieces without the traditional gallery wall look. It’s modern, fresh, and versatile. My favourite part? You can easily swap artwork in and out, so the space always feels new and inspiring.

6. Wall Niches

Your living room might offer the perfect opportunity to add decorative wall niches — a unique way to bring interest to any space. I love this idea because it truly makes an impact. Niches highlight whatever you place inside them, so you can showcase family heirlooms or any special items you’d like to feature.

7. Wood Panelling

Wood panelling is back! If you haven’t heard, there are modern and stylish ways to dress up a large living room wall. I love this approach because it’s minimal and fuss-free, making it a perfect fit for styles like Scandinavian, MCM or Japandi.

8. Wall Tapestry

Wall tapestries, or even rugs hung on the wall, are a fantastic way to dress up a space. It’s one of my favourite techniques because fabric softens any room and feels less predictable than traditional artwork. This approach can also absorb sound, add comfort, and bring style — a definite win in my interior design book!

9. Tile

Tile isn’t just for the bathroom anymore. With so many styles available today, it offers endless possibilities for stunning interior design. Consider creating a striking accent wall in your living room using tile — it’s a bold and beautiful way to elevate any space.

10. Gallery Wall

Gallery walls can definitely be done in a modern way — they don’t have to feel cluttered or busy. They’re a fantastic way to showcase family photos, travel memories, or really anything meaningful to you. Consider decorating your living room walls with a curated collection of photos that tell your story.

How To Decide On Your Large Living Room Wall Decor

Now that I’ve shared 10 ideas for decorating large living room walls, you might be asking yourself, “How do I decide which option is best for my space?” Don’t worry — I have some tips to help guide your decision.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you want to highlight architectural details? If so, consider stone, wainscoting, or other structural elements.
  • Do you want to add visual interest? Artwork or gallery walls might be the perfect choice.
  • Do you want to introduce something fun or colourful? A mural could be just what your space needs.

Decorating large living room walls can feel intimidating — even for me as a designer. Large walls come with more opportunities to make mistakes, so it’s important to consider harmony, scale, and proportion. Big walls demand attention, so your choices should be thoughtful.

Depending on your style and your space, there are hundreds of ways to dress up large walls — and done well, it can completely transform the look and feel of your living room.

And there’s no need to stick to just one method of decorating your living room walls. Combining ideas — like a brick wall with floating shelves or wallpaper with statement artwork — can create a truly compelling result. As long as you give your walls some attention, you’ll be in great shape.

When it comes to the living room, start by deciding what you want to highlight. Is it the fireplace? The statement sofa? Or perhaps the amazing piece of fine art you purchased? Once you’ve identified the focal point, base your design around it and work backward.

If you have large walls, consider how — and if — you want to draw attention to them, and choose furniture and decor that complement the space. Keep in mind the balance and harmony of the room. If you’re adding something dramatic to a wall, make sure to balance it with coordinating elements, so the wall can truly shine.

Interior design is all about balance, and the living room is often where symmetry and harmony are most important.
