Today, we’re starting at the bones of it all: architectural details. Yes, I love furniture. Yes, I love decor. But before all of that, I have to love—or at least not dislike—the architectural details in a home. You might be thinking your home is plain and doesn’t have much character. The good news? You can always add architectural features where there aren’t any. In this post, I’m sharing 10 ways to add character to your home with thoughtful details that make your space more beautiful, timeless, and uniquely yours.

1. Highlight existing trim with contrasting paint

One of my favourite interior design tips is to play with trim colour. Instead of sticking with standard white, consider painting it a bold or dark tone for contrast. I’ve been recommending black trim to clients for years—long before it became a trend—and it always makes the space pop.

Typically, clients are a little hesitant (and sometimes freaked out) when I suggest painting their trim a bold or unexpected colour. But with a little convincing, they’re on board—and once they see the final result, they’re so glad they did it.

2. Add wainscoting for instant elegance

Wainscoting is a home design idea that adds dimension, sophistication, and a custom feel. It’s especially beautiful in traditional spaces, but can be adapted for modern styles, too. In my career, there have been times when I have paired wainscoting with wallpaper for extra funk.
Wainscotting feels very artistic to me—it transforms a wall into something far more interesting than plain drywall. In interior design, I believe you should never leave something plain unless it’s intentionally done to match the style you’re trying to achieve. Don’t just accept defeat with flat, featureless walls for the sake of keeping them plain.
3. Install crown moulding

Crown moulding has stood the test of time. It frames a room beautifully and can be as traditional or as modern as your style demands. This architectural detail instantly elevates any ceiling.
I love that there are so many different styles of crown moulding to choose from. While some people automatically think of crown moulding as traditional, that’s not the case with every style.
4. Create a curved archway

Replacing a standard rectangular doorway with a curved archway adds softness and visual intrigue. It’s an unexpected architectural element that completely changes the feel of a space.
This is a trend that has been popular for a while now, and honestly I have been LOVING it. I am so attracted to curved elements in interior design. There is something so feminine, soft and interesting about curved design elements. So, absolutely, I encourage everyone to consider adding a curved archway.
5. Add ceiling beams for warmth and texture

Ceiling beams—whether structural or purely decorative—bring depth and character to an otherwise plain ceiling. From rustic wood to sleek painted beams, they can fit any interior style.
The ceiling, typically, is left to be a very boring element in most spaces. And as a designer, this makes me sad. There is a golden opportunity with it comes to a ceiling; you have a blank canvas and can jazz it up in many ways. Including, one of my favourite ways which is ceiling beams.
6. Upgrade your baseboards

Baseboards are often overlooked, but changing their height, profile, or colour can make a surprising difference. Tall, detailed baseboards feel custom and polished.
If you want that elevated look, go for a baseboard that is around 9″ in height.
7. Incorporate wood panelling

Wood panelling, especially fluted styles, is back in a big way. It adds warmth, texture, and a nod to classic design. A panelled accent wall can instantly enhance your home’s atmosphere.
I really like this design trend because wood adds warmth that other elements just cannot. Wood is classic to me. So even though we have seen different styles of wood panels come in and out of style throughout interior design history, wood always has a sense of remaining in style.
8. Rethink your staircase

Staircases are architectural focal points that deserve attention. Unique railings, custom treads, or even a bold runner can make your staircase a statement piece.
Often times staircases are overlooked in interior design. However, in some of the most impressive interiors, the staircase is often a focal point.
9. Add a floor border

Floor borders—whether in tile, wood, or stone—frame a space and create visual definition. They’re a subtle design detail that makes the room feel intentional and well-planned.
Recently, I was consulting with my client, and he was asking me how he should lay out his tile. And this is a question I answer frequently for my clients. I convinced him that he needed to add a tile boarder to his bathroom design. Creating a boarder in your flooring detail can really highlight the shape of the room, and it really does add a nice touch. It can even act as a room separator or just introduce a different material into the mix which enhances the space overall.
10. Embrace stone, brick, and raw materials

If your home has original brick or stone, don’t cover it up—celebrate it! These materials bring warmth, texture, and authenticity you can’t replicate with paint or drywall.
A lot of people purchase older homes and immediately start covering up the brick with drywall…this makes me sad, almost as sad as grey vinyl flooring makes me. Don’t do this, embrace raw materials and enhance them in your space.
