The 5 Best Online Interior Decorating Services: A Comparison

If you’re looking to give your home a fresh new look, online interior decorating services can be an efficient and convenient way to get a professional’s expertise. The main benefit of online interior design is that it offers expert services at a lower cost than full-service interior design.

Online decorating services—also known as e-design or virtual interior design—are on the rise as people have become accustomed to doing everything remotely. This means designers and clients can connect over video calls, exchange floor plans, create budgets, choose color palettes, and source furniture, all with the help of the internet.

This is the future of interior design: tech-forward, collaborative, and accessible to everyone. With that in mind, I thought it was only fitting to create a comparison post of the top 5 best online interior decorating services.

Havenly

Online Interior Decorating

I hired a designer to create a living room for me, and considering I am a designer myself, this was a sneaky move. The results? Honestly, just so-so. If you want to read the full article, click here.

Pros

  • Plenty of designers to choose from
  • Multiple revisions allowed

Cons

  • Limited vendors that the designers can source from
  • Not the most experienced designers
  • Long process from start to finish
  • No custom e-Design packages

Havenly attracts people with its affordable pricing, and I get it—we all love a good deal. However, in my experience, the lower cost reflects the quality. I found that the designer I was matched with lacked a basic understanding of flow and proportion, and overall, I wasn’t particularly impressed with the results. That said, Havenly works with many designers, so outcomes will vary depending on who you’re paired with. The online reviews of Havenly reflect the mixed bag results, so be aware.

If you want the full package, including a custom 3D rendering and floor plan, be aware that the basic package doesn’t include these. The 3D rendering and floor plan are very helpful—they allow you to see how your furniture will look in the space and ensure everything fits, which is often worth the extra cost.

We do like that you can make multiple revisions to the rendering and floor plan before finalizing the design. Plus, through the Havenly Happiness Guarantee, the company provides a new designer or a refund if you’re not satisfied.

Overall, what I find missing with Havenly is expert-level designers and the fact that designers can only source from vendors that Havenly profits from. This limitation can affect the quality and originality of your design.

Pricing

The online full package costs $199 (before any deals) and includes 3D renderings and floor plans. You can also choose an in-person package, which costs $699 (before deals) plus $99 for each additional room, and comes with concierge services.

Decorilla

Online Interior Decorating

Decorilla is another online decorating service that I’ve reviewed in detail. If you want to read the full article, click here. My experience with Decorilla shares some similarities with Havenly—there’s a mixed bag of results. On Decorilla’s website, you’ll see glowing reviews, but if you look in more honest corners of the internet, like Reddit, you’ll find that many people have had less-than-great experiences. Much of this comes down to being matched with the right designer for your taste and style.

Pros

  • Provides 3D renders
  • Access to different tiers of designers
  • Furniture discounts from select vendors

Cons

  • Limited vendor options for furniture selections
  • No fully customizable e-design packages
  • Pricey for virtual design services

How Decorilla Works

Decorilla’s process is a little different from other online design services:

  1. You receive custom proposals from two designers based on your room preferences and style inspiration.
  2. You select your favourite concept.
  3. That designer delivers the final design and sources the furniture, which you can purchase and track directly on Decorilla’s site.

Pricing

Decorilla offers Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages for a specific room. Each package varies in designer involvement and experience.

  • Example: Before any discounts or sales, a living room starts at $849 for Bronze and can reach over $2,000 for Platinum.
  • If you hire Decorilla for multiple rooms, you can receive a bundle discount.

Spacejoy

Online Interior Decorating

Photo Via Spacejoy

Spacejoy is another online interior design service that’s gained popularity for its user‑friendly process and interactive design experience. From my experience and research, Spacejoy sits somewhere between traditional e‑design platforms and more personalized virtual services. What stands out most is its 3D room visualizer and interactive design board, which many clients find helpful — but like other services, results can vary depending on your designer match.

Pros

  • Strong on the realistic 3D room visuals
  • Interactive design boards
  • Access to curated furniture selections with direct purchase links

Cons

  • Furniture options are still limited to select vendor catalogues
  • You can’t vet your designer beforehand — you may or may not be paired with someone who matches your taste
  • Some users report challenges with how revisions are handled
  • No fully customizable e-design packages

How Spacejoy Works

Spacejoy’s process is somewhat unique because it leans heavily on visual tools:

  1. Submit your room info and inspiration photos.
  2. Spacejoy uses that to create a design board with recommended furniture and décor.
  3. You and the assigned designer refine the board together.
  4. Spacejoy generates 3D visuals of your space so you can see how everything fits before purchasing.
  5. Furniture and décor items are linked, so you can purchase directly through Spacejoy’s platform.

Pricing

Spacejoy typically offers tiered packages based on the level of detail and number of revisions included. Prices vary depending on the room size and the package, but generally, you are looking at between $199 – $599+.

  • Standard packages start around a mid‑range price point compared to other online design services
  • Premium packages include more custom options, more revisions, and more hands‑on designer support

Exact pricing can change over time, so it’s always best to check Spacejoy’s current packages directly on their website.

Spaces by Dee

The totally unbiased (well… almost) review of Spaces by Dee. Well… let me at least explain why working with an independent interior designer might be the better choice.

After reviewing multiple online interior decorating platforms, one thing became very clear to me: many people are unhappy with their experience, not necessarily because online design doesn’t work, but because of a mismatch with their designer.

Most large platforms don’t allow you to properly consult with your designer before paying. You’re matched, assigned, and then committed. And often, that mismatch in style, communication, or understanding leads to disappointing results.

When you work with an independent interior designer, you can actually get a sense of whether they get your vibe — if you know what I mean.

Finding the right designer is like finding the right hairstylist. You need someone skilled who understands your vision, works within your budget, and respects your parameters.

Why Work With an Independent Interior Designer?

Pros

  • Can source from any vendor, including your favourites
  • Packages can be fully customized and tailored to your specific project
  • A much more personalized, collaborative experience
  • You’re supporting a small business
  • No hidden platform fees
  • Direct communication with your designer

Cons

  • Not a big-name online interior design platform

How Spaces by Dee Works

Spaces by Dee offers tailored e-design packages, which are ideal if you have a unique project and feel that cookie-cutter online decorating services don’t quite match your needs.

You can reach out directly to receive a package customized to your project. There are also structured e-design options available, including:

  • Designer on Call
  • Renovation Plan Review
  • Full Room E-Design Packages

The full room packages are comparable to larger platforms but include:

  • Consultation time
  • Conceptual mood boards
  • Floor plans
  • 3D visuals
  • Unlimited revisions
  • A curated product list

And the best part? Furniture and décor can be sourced from anywhere — including your favourite vendors — giving you complete flexibility to bring your space to life.

Pricing

Spaces by Dee offers e-designer services comparable to Decorilla, however, more affordable.

  • E-design packages starting at $98 for those who want less hands-on guidance
  • Starter e-design package at $349
  • E-design Full Room Service for $600

Crate & Barrel

Online Interior Decorating

Photo Via Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel offers free design concierge services, along with online interior design deliverables. It’s free because designers will exclusively recommend Crate & Barrel products. In other words, it’s a strategic way for the brand to design your dream space using only their inventory.

And honestly, I’m not necessarily mad at it — Crate & Barrel does offer beautiful furniture and décor. However, a home furnished entirely from one brand can feel a bit like wearing a single-label outfit from head to toe. There’s less diversity and layering, which can impact the overall personality of the space.

Pros

  • One-on-one design time
  • 3D renderings provided
  • Custom floor plans

Cons

  • Designers can only source from Crate & Barrel products

What to Look for in an Online Interior Decorating Service

When choosing an online interior design service, it’s important to understand how the process works and what you’re actually paying for.

How Do Online Interior Design Services Work?

Most online interior design services follow a similar structure:

  1. You begin by filling out a questionnaire outlining your style preferences, budget, which rooms you want designed, and your room dimensions.
  2. The company either pairs you with a designer or allows you to choose from a few options.
  3. You’ll typically have a call with the designer to discuss your vision and exchange ideas.
  4. The designer may present mood boards, material swatches, or inspiration boards to refine the direction.
  5. You’ll stay in communication as needed while the designer develops your project.
  6. Final deliverables often include 3D renderings, floor plans, and personalized shopping lists so you can visualize and execute the design.
  7. Most services allow for revisions before final approval.

The structure is fairly standardized — but the experience can vary dramatically depending on the designer you’re matched with.

My Advice on Choosing the Right Online Interior Decorating Service

As a designer, I cannot emphasize enough how important chemistry is between the client and the designer.

With some clients, the process feels effortless because we just “get” each other. And that dynamic makes all the difference.

Choosing a designer is similar to choosing the right hairstylist, contractor, or accountant. I recommend that you:

  • Speak with the designer before committing
  • Pay attention to their communication style
  • Assess whether they understand your personal style
  • Ask about how they run their design process
  • Trust your gut

Most of the time, before I hire anyone myself, I rely on my instinct about who understands me best — and it almost always works out.

Interior design is collaborative. The right designer won’t just deliver a pretty space — they’ll make the process feel aligned, seamless, and enjoyable.
