Revitalize your Space: Small Ways to Refresh your Home for the New Year

As we embrace the upcoming new year, it’s the perfect time to refresh our living spaces and infuse new energy into our homes. Whether you want to create a serene sanctuary or introduce vibrant changes, sprucing up your home can invigorate your surroundings and uplift your spirits.

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

New Year’s might be my favourite holiday. I love the feeling of a fresh start and the opportunity for reinvention. It’s a time that I used to reflect on the past year and make note of any changes that I want to implement for the coming year. It’s also a great time to refresh the home to kick off the fresh start feeling. I love rearranging, decluttering and improving my surroundings. It clears my mind and creates a better, refreshed living environment.

How I refresh my home

I personally always start by cleaning out my closet. Over time, useless items tend to collect in there and take up precious space. I like to get rid of all the random, not useful items and also review all my clothing pieces. I don’t like having a lot of clothes, I get rid of clothing regularly. Partially because my style evolves so often, and clothing gets worn over some time. I only want to keep things that I love and will wear plenty. Having less is more fulfilling in my eyes, because you really get use out of the things you own.

When it comes to the rest of my home, I refresh by pinpointing which areas don’t make me particularly feel good or inspired. This year, I’ve identified my bedroom needs a refresh. There’s not much going on in my bedroom. I walk into the room and don’t feel anything. When I walk into a space, I want to feel something. I want to start my days inspired and end my days relaxed. So, I need to find a way to add some personality into my bedroom to evoke those feelings.

You’d think that as a designer, my place would already be perfect. But, you see, right now I’m not living in my forever home. So, honestly, I haven’t taken much pride in my current home. However, I’ve determined that while I wait for my forever home (it’s currently under construction and won’t be done for 2 years), I should make the effort to make my current home feel as good as possible. And that starts with decluttering, refreshing and reimagining.

Small ways to refresh your space for the new year:

Refreshing your home for the new year doesn’t necessarily require a complete overhaul. Small changes and thoughtful adjustments can make a significant difference. Embrace this opportunity to create an environment that nurtures positivity, creativity, and comfort in the year ahead.

Declutter and organize

Start by decluttering your home. Clear out unnecessary items, organize spaces, and create a sense of order. Donate or recycle items you no longer need. Consider employing storage solutions such as baskets, shelves, or decorative boxes to keep things tidy. A clutter-free environment can foster a sense of calmness and mental clarity.

Rearrange and redecorate

Give your rooms a fresh look by rearranging furniture or swapping decor pieces between rooms. Experiment with new layouts to optimize space and functionality. Introduce pops of colour with vibrant cushions, throws, or artwork. Consider adding indoor plants to bring in a touch of nature and create a lively atmosphere.

The most essential action to take to refresh…

Deep clean EVERYTHING

refresh your home

This is the KEY to a good refresh. You can’t feel refreshed in a dirty home. I cannot even function in a dirty/unorganized space. Interior design does not matter if your space is a mess.

A thorough deep clean can breathe new life into your home. Scrub surfaces, polish furniture, clean carpets, and wash curtains. Refreshing linens, such as bedding and towels, can instantly brighten up rooms. Don’t forget the windows—cleaning them can bring in more natural light and enhance the overall ambience.

If you’re too lazy, treat yourself and pay for a cleaning service.

Upgrade lighting and ambience

This is a creative way to refresh your home. Reevaluate your lighting to create various moods in different spaces. Experiment with new light fixtures, or swap out bulbs for warmer or cooler tones (you’d be amazed to see the difference that different light bulbs make). Incorporate ambient lighting with candles or string lights to add warmth and coziness. Smart lighting solutions can also offer convenience and customization options.

Create functional spaces

Identify areas in your home that could serve a dual purpose or need a functional makeover. Convert a corner into a cozy reading nook with a comfortable chair and good lighting. Transform an empty wall into a productive workspace with a desk and organizers. Make use of underutilized spaces to maximize functionality.

Get in touch with your personal home decor style and infuse your space with personal touches

Add personal touches that reflect your unique home decor style and personality. Display cherished keepsakes, artwork, or photographs. Incorporate DIY projects (if that’s your thing) or crafts to add unique elements that resonate with you. Your home should not only look good but also feel like an extension of yourself.

Set the New Year off right

We all set goals for the new year. Maybe you want to lose 20 pounds, maybe you want to start a business, maybe you want to redecorate your home (if that’s the case, call me), or maybe you want to leave your husband. All our goals and plans will differ. Some of us will meet those goals and some of us will fall short. Regardless, I think everyone should at least try and start the new year off with a clean slate, a refreshed home and a belly full of cake.

Cheers to a rejuvenated and inspiring living space!
