8 Ideas to transform bedrooms into purposeful spaces
As kids move out, their empty bedrooms present a canvas for creative reinvention. Consider converting a room in your empty nest into these rooms:
1) Hobby haven:
Dedicate the room to pursue your hobbies. Whether it’s painting, crafting, music, or any passion you’ve always wanted to explore, transform this space into your sanctuary for creativity.

2) Home gym:
Equip the room with workout essentials, fitness gear, and motivational decor. Create an exercise haven to prioritize your health and fitness routine.
3) A feel-good room
How lovely would it be to have a beautifully decorated room just for reading books or just sitting and relaxing with your cat? I believe that there should be at least one room in your home that makes you feel really good. Feeling good in your space comes from creating an ambience that allows you to feel good. So maybe this means creating an open and airy room, or maybe it means a dark and sensual room. Whatever floats your boat. But seriously, if you have extra rooms in your empty nest, this is a great and luxurious option.
4) Home office
Maybe now that your meddling kids left, you have an extra room to convert into a home office. As you creep up to retirement, (if you haven’t already), it is beneficial to create a functional office space. I find that having an office space, versus just working from your kitchen, makes one much more productive. 5) Play room
You might have an empty nest, but your kids may not (or, not for long). Maybe you’re looking forward to becoming a grandparent. What better way to become the cool grandparent than to create a super cool playroom? Create a room with a super playful mural, a playground and of course plenty of toy variety for your grandkids to enjoy.

I really believe that you need to make things fun and exciting again as you age. Reading this, you may think I am an empty nester myself. But I am far from it. But anyway. You might have an empty nest and may feel a little unexcited about this next phase in life (totally understandable). I think this is a good opportunity to explore the options of creating fun rooms, like maybe a movie room. Instead of watching movies in your living room, make it special. Create a space with super comfy recliner chairs and a projector screen, maybe even get a popcorn machine if you’re fancy. This is a great way to start having fun in your home.
7) A second primary bedroom
If you’re still married at this point, congratulations. If you’re not, congratulations as well. Have you ever considered having a separate bedroom from your spouse? Yes, it is not conventional, but it is luxurious. Instead of being frustrated with your spouse because they leave their dirty clothes everywhere, you can ease that pain and gain some independent time with 2 primary bedrooms. I really predict that this will become a big trend in the future, and I am all for it.
8) Guest accommodations
Convert a spare room into a welcoming guest suite. Outfit the space with a comfortable bed, quality linens, and bedside essentials to provide a cozy haven for visiting family and friends. I think guest rooms should feel a little luxurious. It’s the perfect opportunity to create a hotel feeling at home. And, certainly, it will make your guests feel super cared for. So don’t just depersonalize your kid’s old bedrooms and call it a guest suite (I mean, you could), but I would encourage you to put some extra effort in and really feel as if the kids moved out.

Rejuvenate common areas with a new purpose. To mark the beginning of your new life, it’s a great idea to move your furniture around to feel as if there has been an intentional and positive change in your home. Expand the living room for more social interactions or hobbies. Remove bulky furniture or rearrange seating to create an open, inviting space for gatherings or new activities. Declutter, and donate things that no longer serve you.
