The Best and Worst Gen Z Interior Design Trends

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is making its mark on the world of interior design with trends that reflect their unique values and lifestyles. As the first generation to grow up with the internet and social media, Gen Z’s design preferences are influenced by a blend of global cultures, technological advancements, and a strong commitment to sustainability. Here’s a look at some defining interior design trends embraced by Gen Z.

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

At a quick glance, I’d say Gen Z’s interior design style is quirky, colourful, playful and fun. Which, I am all here for. However, I do find Gen Z to be super into fad’s, therefore, I don’t really think Gen Z’s interior design style is very timeless. So, certainly there are elements about Gen Z’s interior design style which I like, and elements that I don’t really like. I thought I’d break down the Gen Z interior design style.

The elements of Gen Z’s Interior Design Style

1. Crafty

Gen Z Interior

I’ve noticed that Gen Z is really embracing DIY projects. If you get on Tiktok and look up Gen Z interior design, you will find plenty of kids refinishing old furniture, making their own furniture and upcycling. Which, is very impressive and great for the environment. Plus, this creates one-of-a-kind pieces. I think this is one of the best trends for those reasons.

2. Bold Colours and Patterns

Gen Z Interior

Unlike previous generations who often favoured neutral tones, Gen Z loves bold, vibrant colours and patterns. They are not afraid to make a statement with their decor. The trend uses bright, contrasting colours in furniture, walls, and accessories. Gen Z Experiments with eye-catching patterns, whether it’s through wallpaper, rugs, or textiles.

This is a trend I am DIGGING. No wait, what do the Gen Zers say? I don’t know. But, I love when people embrace colour instead of run from it. Colour is just too good to miss out on. Read Colour Pop: Interiors with Pops of Vibrant Colours.

3. Over-decorating

Gen Z Interior

Over-decorating is a thing, yes. This is coming from a designer. I have noticed that some Gen Z interiors took it a touch too far with accessorizing, resulting in an interior that is a bit tacky and overdone. You have to find the sweet spot with decorating, sometimes less truly is more. White space is needed. When you have too many decor pieces, none of them really stand out and make the impact that you are looking to achieve. So, if you want to decorate the Gen Z way, keep that in mind.

4. Multi-Functional Furniture

With many Gen Zers living in smaller apartments or dorms, multi-functional furniture is a must. They appreciate pieces that serve more than one purpose. Read Products for a Small Space: How to Gain Space and Storage.

Think furniture that offers built-in storage, like beds with drawers or coffee tables with hidden compartments. Or modular furniture that can be easily rearranged to suit different needs, such as a sofa that can convert into a guest bed or a desk that doubles as a dining table.

This is another trend that I love and think everyone should embrace. If something can be multi-purpose, why not? It just makes sense and allows for innovative furniture. Read Innovative Furniture Pieces You Must See.

5. Personalized and Eclectic Style

Gen Z loves to express their individuality through personalized and eclectic decor. They mix different styles, eras, and influences to create a space that truly reflects their personality.

Gen Z is not afraid to break the rules and mix elements that you love, even if they don’t traditionally go together. Read A Guide to the Vibrant World of Eclectic Decor.

This is a trend that I love, eclectic interior design is so easy to achieve. There are almost no rules. The more mixing and matching, the better.

6. Checkered Pattern

I’ve noticed that Gen Z Interior design often has checkered rugs and accessories. Which, I think, is cool. But I do see this as more of a fad that won’t age well. I think people will look back and be tired to see so many interiors with the same style of rug. Plus, I absolutely love rugs and there are SO MANY amazing rug options. There are many playful and cool rugs that are not checkered that could seamlessly integrate in the Gen Z style.

7. Mushrooms

I’ve really noticed a resurgence in mushroom accessories at home decor stores. Gen Z loves mushrooms, and maybe in more ways than just their interior design. Anyway, what do I think of this trend? Well, like the checkered rugs, I think it’s a fad that people will quickly get over. But, it’s cool, I certainly would not be opposed to throwing a little mushroom into a space.

8. Organic Shapes

Genz Z loves organic shapes! I’m talking furniture, accessories…you name it. In every Gen Z space I see rounded corners, and I love it. Organic shapes are super feminine, playful and sexy (in my opinion). So, I love this trend and embrace it.

Gen Z’s style all wrapped up

Gen Z’s interior design trends reflect their values of individuality and playfulness. By embracing bold colours, multi-functional furniture, and personalized decor, they create spaces that are both stylish and functional. Whether you’re a member of Gen Z or simply inspired by their fresh approach to design, these trends offer plenty of inspiration for creating a vibrant and contemporary home.
