The Best Dining Room Rugs + Dining Room Rug Guide

In my opinion, the dining room is where the real magic happens in a home. Over the holidays, I found myself reflecting on just how essential this space is for hosting and gathering. More often than not, clients come to me looking for ways to maximize seating while also elevating the overall look and feel of their dining room—because this is where the holidays happen, and often where much more than just meals take place.

Dining rooms frequently double as workspaces, catch-all surfaces for daily items, and yes—places where cats love to jump up and lounge. With so much happening in one space, it’s no surprise that people are often divided on one key design question: do rugs belong under dining room tables, or should they be left out altogether?

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to properly measure for a dining room rug, how to choose a rug that doesn’t clash with adjacent spaces (like your living room), and I’ll share some of my favorite dining room rug finds online.

AVOID COSTLY (AND UGLY) DESIGN MISTAKES

Do Rugs Belong In The Dining Room?

The dining room is one of those spaces where functionality really needs to be considered before adding an area rug. This is a room where chairs are constantly being pulled in and out, food is likely to end up on the floor, and spills are almost inevitable. For these reasons, many people choose to skip a rug in the dining room altogether—and in some cases, I do the same.

That said, as a designer, I LOVE rugs. They’re one of those home elements I genuinely enjoy shopping for—right up there with wallpaper, chandeliers, sofas, and accent chairs. I’m drawn to pieces that make a statement, and rugs are essentially artwork for the floor.

So, when it comes to the question of whether a rug belongs under a dining table, the answer really comes down to your personal preferences and how you use the space.

How To Measure For a Rug In Your Dining Room

My no-fail rule when measuring for a dining room rug is to think about the chairs. All chairs should sit fully on the rug—even when pulled out and in use. You never want a chair that’s half on and half off the rug; that’s when things start to feel unstable.

Because of this, your rug should be approximately 48–60 inches wider than your dining table, accounting for 24–30 inches on each side. This allows enough space for someone to pull out their chair, sit comfortably, and remain fully on the rug.

How To Choose The Right Rug

Choosing a rug can be tricky—especially if there’s another rug nearby, like one in your living room. So how do you choose a rug that won’t clash? There’s actually quite a bit to consider.

One of the first things I look at is the flooring. Recently, I worked with clients on a dining room that had very busy tile flooring. The style they were aiming for was Japandi meets Scandinavian—both of which are calm, minimal, and anything but visually overwhelming. In this case, I approached the rug selection as a way to create a blank slate in the space. The goal was to choose something understated—nothing busy—so the dining table, which ended up being quite unique, could take center stage. Here, the rug played a supporting role, not a starring one.

You can apply this same thinking when considering your living room rug. Is your living room rug busy or heavily patterned? What design style resonates with you? Is your flooring already visually loud? And what are the true “stars” of the space?

These are the questions I ask myself when working with clients.

Now, you might be thinking, “That’s a lot of designer talk.”
So let me simplify it.

If you already have a busy floor or a heavily patterned living room rug, you probably don’t want to introduce another bold, busy element. On the other hand, if your flooring and rugs are minimal, you can afford to bring in a bit more pattern or texture.

At the end of the day, interior design is about balance and harmony. You want to understand which elements are the main “flavors” in the space, and which pieces are there to support them—rather than compete for attention.

The Best Online Dining Room Rug Finds

Okay, let’s get into it, here are some of my favourite online finds for dining room rugs!

For a Minimal Dining room

I love this rug by Birch Lane. While it’s minimal and simple, the border beautifully frames the dining room table. I’ve always thought of a rug as a kind of frame for a space, which is why a bordered rug works so well in a dining room.

This Amazon rug also features a border—and I think it’s safe to say I’m a fan of bordered rugs when it comes to dining rooms. In a dining space, the center of a rug often isn’t very visible unless you have a glass dining table, so in these cases, it’s really the edges that make the biggest impact.

If you’re looking for a jute rug specifically for under your dining table, this is a great option. It has subtle design details that give it just enough character while still keeping the look simple and timeless.

my ornate rug choices

If you lean toward a more traditional style, you may be drawn to something more ornate—and this rug from Perigold is absolutely stunning. It features beautiful detail along the border that really shines, while the overall pattern remains balanced and refined. This is a versatile, elegant rug that could work beautifully in many dining spaces.

I also love this traditional rug from Joss & Main, it has a lot of warmth and richness which might be what’s missing in a dining space.

for a transitional dining room

Maybe your dining room isn’t quite traditional and not quite contemporary—you’re looking for that perfect in-between. I love this rug from Perigold for that reason. It has enough visual interest to draw the eye, but instead of relying on a busy pattern, it introduces texture. This style of rug works beautifully in many dining rooms and bridges the gap between classic and modern.

I also think this rug from Wayfair is a no-fail choice. I love subtle patterns like these, it bodes well with many styles and adds some texture.

I love the movement in this rug. Contemporary style is all about what’s current—what’s fresh, what’s catching attention—and this piece feels both modern and unique. It features a subtle yet interesting shape that adds visual interest without overwhelming the dining space.

Now, this rug screams modern organic, and I love it. It’s impactful without being loud, and the pattern is truly contemporary and artsy.

Designer’s Advice On Selecting The Right Rug

There are plenty of rugs out there, and it can definitely feel overwhelming. This list doesn’t capture all of the best dining room rugs—just a few I’ve sourced for clients over the years and have come to appreciate. My top tips for selecting a dining room rug are:

  • Choose a low-pile rug – it’s easier to clean and maintain.
  • Pick the right size – make sure all chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.
  • Complement the space – the rug should work with the other elements in your dining room.
